Meditation: Soul Food

Many people are not aware of all of the benefits that come with meditating on a regular basis. Adding it to your daily lifestyle can ease quite a bit of stress out of your life and help you to relax. If you have never mediated before you may be curious about what it takes to get started. It only takes a few minutes a day and is definitely something that should be added to your bucket list if you want to live a long and healthy life.

Meditation for Beginners

If you want to be able to meditate you must first learn how to concentrate. It is important that you are able to focus on one single point. This could be staring at a painting or repeating a mantra. This is the most challenging part of meditation for beginners because it can be difficult to concentrate at times. It is best for beginners to start out with just a few minutes a day and then build up to much more.

Mindfulness meditation encourages the individual to observe wandering thoughts as they begin to drift through their mind. You should not get involved with these thoughts or pass judgment on them, but be aware of them as they arise. You will begin to notice that your feelings and thoughts tend to move in specific patterns. After time, you will be able to develop more of an inner balance.

Health Benefits

There are a lot of health benefits that come with meditating on a regular basis. Being relaxed is just one of the many perks to meditating daily.

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Lower heart rate
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Less perspiration
  • Slower respiratory rate
  • Less anxiety
  • Lower blood cortisol levels
  • More feelings of well-being
  • Less stress
  • Deep relaxation

How to Meditate

You must first sit comfortably on the floor or in a meditation chair. Close your eyes and breathe as naturally as you can. Focus your attention on your breath and how the body moves each time you inhale and exhale. Make mental note of your body as it moves. Try not to let your mind wander. This can be extremely difficult for beginners. If your mind does wander, take a deep breath and focus on something nearby. If you can do this for 2-3 minutes successfully, then you are at a good pace.

If you want to live a long and stress-free life then adding meditation to it can make a big impact on achieving that goal. It may be difficult at first but if you take your time to ease your way into it, you will find that you feel less anxious, and ready to take on anything that comes your way.
